The accession consists of hundreds of original color photographic negatives and prints documenting the construction of R/V ROGER REVELLE (AGOR 24). The superstructure of the vessel was built at Trinity Marine Group shipyard at Gulfport, Mississippi, then transported by barge to Halter Marine Shipyard at Moss Point, Mississippi where the vessel was completed. The ship was constructed under Naval Sea Systems Command contract for the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The photographs were taken by SIO Nimitz Marine Facility Ship Construction Coordinator Edwin Petersen as a record of the construction. Petersen was responsible for overseeing construction and monitoring contract performance and schedule. The accession includes negatives and one or two sets of prints. Print sets are incomplete, and some negatives are missing. Negatives are arranged chronologically. One set of prints is mounted and labelled with the date, photograph group number, title and remarks. The first photograph was taken October 7, 1993, the day before construction began. The last photograph was taken as the ship was being fitted out on June 3, 1996. The photographs include images of the construction and the keel laying ceremony (December 9, 1993). There are also images of the launching of USNS PATHFINDER (October 7, 1993) and NOAA ship R/V RONALD H. BROWN (May 30, 1996). The accession includes one group of photographs taken when the ship was underway. These include photographs of Robert A. Knox and Thomas Althouse.
